One day in 2016, we got an urgent call from Lee B. Just a few months earlier, we had replaced his roof with three-tab shingles from renowned manufacturer GAF. (Today, we only install GAF’s sturdier dimensional shingles, but at the time, three-tabs were more common.)
The reason for the call? Lee was rightfully upset to find that a few of his new shingles had blown loose during a recent windstorm.
When he filled us in on the details, we quickly realized what had happened. Lee’s installation took place in the dead of winter on an unusually frigid day. The south-facing section of the roof was in full sunlight, but the north section remained in the shadows.
The resulting temperature difference caused an unexpected problem. While all the south-facing shingles sealed properly during installation, some of the north-facing shingles didn’t.
When the windstorm hit, all the shingles on the south-facing roof section stayed put. However, the weaker seal on the north-facing section led to the unfortunate shingle loss.
