If you’ve ever looked at a metal roof and thought it looked a little… wavy, you’re not crazy.
We get that question a lot, especially from folks who just had a metal roof installed and were expecting it to look perfectly flat. Then the sun hits it a certain way and suddenly you start noticing little ripples across the panels.
That’s called oil canning.
And the honest answer is, it’s pretty normal. But the reason it happens is a little more involved than most people realize.
So what is oil canning?
At its simplest, oil canning is a visible waviness in the flat areas of a metal panel. You’ll usually notice it on standing seam roofs, especially when the light is low or reflecting across the surface.
From a technical side, what you’re seeing is the panel relieving internal stress. Metal doesn’t just sit still. It’s constantly reacting to temperature, and when those stresses build up in certain spots, the panel shifts just enough to show it.
That’s where the waviness comes from.
Why it happens in the first place
There isn’t just one cause. It’s usually a mix of things stacking on top of each other.
For one, metal panels come from coils that are rolled, cut, and formed. That process can leave behind what’s called residual stress in the material. You won’t see it right away, but once the panel is installed and exposed to heat and cold cycles, it starts to show up.
Then you’ve got thermal movement. Around here, we can go from a cold morning to a hot afternoon pretty quick, and metal is expanding and contracting through all of it. That movement alone puts stress on the panel.
Installation plays a role too. Not in the sense that something was done “wrong,” but small things matter. How flat the decking is, how the panels are fastened, how much freedom they have to move. Even minor variations underneath the panel can telegraph through and become visible.
And then there’s just the nature of flat surfaces. The smoother and wider the panel, the easier it is for your eye to pick up any variation.
Why you notice it more on some roofs than others
This is why standing seam roofs get called out for oil canning more than other systems.
They’re designed with wide, flat pans between the seams, which looks great, but it also means there’s nowhere for that stress to hide. If the panel moves even a little, you’re going to see it under the right lighting.
Some manufacturers add striations or small ribs into the panel to help break that up. It doesn’t stop oil canning completely, but it does make it less noticeable.
Is it actually a problem?
Most of the time, no.
Oil canning is considered a cosmetic issue, not a performance issue. The roof is still doing what it’s supposed to do. It’s shedding water, holding up to the elements, and protecting the house.
That said, it can catch people off guard if no one talked about it beforehand. If you’re expecting something perfectly flat, it stands out more than it should.
How much is “normal”?
This is where it gets a little gray.
There isn’t a universal standard that says a panel has to look a certain way. Most manufacturers will tell you straight up that some level of oil canning is inherent to light-gauge metal roofing.
In other words, it’s expected. Not ideal maybe, but expected.
The key is knowing that going in so you’re not surprised later.
Can it be reduced?
Yeah, to a degree.
Thicker metal helps. Striations help. Making sure the substrate is as flat as possible helps. Proper fastening and clip spacing so the panel can move the way it’s supposed to helps.
All of that makes a difference.
But even if everything is done right, you can still see some oil canning depending on the light and the angle you’re looking at it from.
That part doesn’t really go away.
Oil canning vs. something actually being wrong
This is where people start to get uneasy, and it makes sense.
Oil canning is a visual thing. It might not look perfectly smooth, but the roof is still functioning like it should.
If there’s an actual issue, it usually shows up in different ways. Water getting in somewhere it shouldn’t. Panels not lining up right. Fasteners backing out. Sections that look like they’ve shifted or lifted.
The other difference is consistency. Oil canning tends to look soft and uneven, and it changes depending on how the light hits it. You might barely notice it in the morning and then see it more in the evening.
Real problems don’t do that. They look off all the time.
If something looks sharp, defined, or out of place no matter when you look at it, that’s when it’s worth having someone take a closer look.
The bottom line
Metal roofs are one of the most durable systems you can put on a house, especially in Texas.
But they’re not perfectly rigid, and they’re not going to look flawless from every angle.
A little waviness here and there is usually just the material doing what it naturally does.
As long as the roof is installed correctly and performing the way it should, oil canning isn’t something to lose sleep over.
